Initially working as a children’s book illustrator and caricaturist, Walter Schmögner became one of the exceptional figures of the Austrian art scene in the 1970ies, alongside Alfred Kubin and Walter Pichler. In drawings and paintings, Schmögner created countless bizarre beings, apparitions from another world, animalistic and difficult to classify. His architectural visions, reminiscent of Piranesi, or drawings with a colorful fauna theme, trace the constant transformation of matter, the metamorphic. The drawings are charged with a tragic-comic self-irony and form the starting point for Schmögner’s additional sculptural work.
