Herbert Brandl is considered one of the most successful contemporary Austrian painters, renowned for his large-format landscapes that bridge abstract and representational styles.

Landscape has always been a dominant theme in his work, with his fascination for the monumentality of the mountain world becoming increasingly evident in his works. In various formats and techniques, Brandl reinterprets the mountain motif, using expressive gestures, abstract color spaces, and prominent forms. He is also associated with the Neue Wilden (New Wild Ones), a group of artists who He is associated with the Neue Wilden (New Wild Ones), a group of artists from late 1970s and early 1980s Germany known for their expressive, figurative painting. They rejected conceptual and minimalist trends in favor of bold colors and energetic brushstrokes, a style still evident in Brandl’s work today.

Herbert Brandl, born 1959 in Graz, Austria, lives and works in Vienna. He studied at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and later shared his knowledge as a professor there from 2004 to 2019. Brandl has participated in significant exhibitions, including documenta IX in Kassel in 1992 and the Venice Biennale in 2007.
